The Sunday after the Tsunami that devastated the Philippines in 2004, I shared with my congregation how we could help through our denominational relief organization (UMCOR). That morning there happened to be other financial requests in the bulletin. This prompted one person to complain out loud during announcements that “the church is always in my pocket!”

No matter how many times I turn my smartphone or tablet, the screen adjusts so that I’m looking at it right-side-up. I was astounded to learn that this was not magic, but the work of a gyroscope that senses every motion the phone or iPad makes.
In Matthew 18, Jesus urges us to keep our relationships right-side up. The problem is that unlike smartphones and iPads, we don't have a built-in gyroscope to make it automatic and easy − not one that was scientifically created.
Lighthouse Word Church will be offering free health and wellness classes, beginning Tuesday, Sept. 30, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. for six weeks.
Each class will stand on its own, so visitors can attend one, a few or all, if so desired.
Topics include: nutrition, body wellness, healing from within, stress busters and mineral personality assessment. Lots of information, handouts, games, activities and prizes; relevant to all ages. Childcare will be provided.
One of the tools of those who love the outdoors is a knife. There has always been something special about getting a new knife. I see that same satisfaction in my son. He owns several and is never unhappy when he receives another. It's almost a rite of passage when a young man gets his first. Some weaker types cringe at the thought of their son having a knife. I cringe at the thought of them cringing over such a common and natural thing.
