  • Food preservation (canning) update

       Spring is here and your garden soon will be producing tons of vegetables and fruits. Or, you may want to take advantage of farmer’s markets, road-side stands or you-pick operations. Preserving some of that food for use later in the year will give you great taste and good nutrition and will also make memories for a lifetime.

  • Bull Bash

    The Chiefland FFA Bull Bash will be starting at 8 p.m. at Carter's Arena, just outside of Chiefland. Advance tickets are $10, or tickets can be bought at the gate for $12.

  • History of the Yulee Sugar Mill Ruins presented by the Cedar Key Historical Society

       The Cedar Key Historical Society invites all interested persons to their last Thursday coffee of this season on Thursday, April 21, at 10 a.m. at the Cedar Key Community Center.  Ranger Leroy Smith, of the Yulee Sugar Mill Ruins Historic State Park, Homosassa, will be on hand to enlighten and entertain the audience about this little known historic site.

    Bronson Homemakers Annual Bingo
    The Bronson Home and Community Educators, also known as the Homemakers, is hosting its annual bingo from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church, 235 Court Street, Bronson. Admission is $5, which entitles you to two cards. Extra cards are two for $1. Lunch will be provided (sandwiches, salads, desserts and drinks).     Today

    Haven memorial service
    The Haven Hospice Love and Remembrance Memorial is 6 p.m. at the Haven Hospice Tri-Counties Care Center, 311 N.E. 9th Street, Chiefland. The memorial is open to anyone in the community who has lost a loved one. Attendees are encouraged to bring pictures and mementos of loved ones that can be placed on our Table of Memories. Refreshments will be served. Registration is not required.  For more information, call Haven Hospice at 352-493-2333.

  • Egg hunts, story times at libraries

       The Levy Public Library System will be having Easter egg hunts at the library branches. Luther Callaway Public Library in Chiefland will have its hunt at 4:30 p.m. on April 14. Bronson Public Library will have its hunt at 4:30 p.m. on April 18. A.F. Knotts Public Library will have its hunt at 3 p.m. on April 19 and the Williston Public Library's hunt will be at 4:30 p.m. on April 21. Kids of all ages are welcome and will be able to take their eggs and buckets home with them. Large groups are welcome, but please let your librarian know in advance.

  • Fanning to host Springs and Blooms Garden Festival

    Celebrate the colors, textures and shapes
     of north Florida landscapes

       Fanning Springs State Park will host its annual spring garden festival Saturday, April 9 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. A variety of native plants will be for sale, and techniques for environmentally friendly watering, fertilizing and controlling pest will be demonstrated.

  • Chili cook-off this weekend

    AMVETS Auxiliary No. 88 is hosting the 2nd Annual Chili-Cookoff on Saturday, March 26 at noon. The public is invited to participate.  Registration is $10 at the door. Pre-registration can be done at the Post, 10050 N.E. State Road 24, Bronson.
    Entries — the prepared chili — must be at the AMVETS Post 88 by noon.  Each contestant is responsible for cleaning up the area at the end of the day. True chili is defined as any kind of meat or combination of meats cooked with chili peppers, various other spices and other ingredients.The judging is at 3 p.m.
