Women's Golf

-A A +A
By Marialle Leonard

The Chiefland Women's Golf Association played the second of three rounds in the Annual Low Gross Ladies Championship.

After two rounds, Marilee Leonard leads by one stroke. Barbara Ahola is in second place and Patsy Sheppard is in third place in the Championship Flight.

In the Second Flight, Pat Renaud is leading with a six-stroke advantage over second place Mary Lindsay. Maggie Knapp is a close third place in this flight.

The Third Flight has Betty Tillis with a four-stroke lead over second place Marie Dickmann. Jan Hendrix is only two strokes behind Marie, vying for the runner-up position. The third round will be played on Feb. 13 and should be very exciting in all three races.

We also played a "side game" of Low Putts. The greens are perfect, so why did we have so many three putts– I started out the first five holes with only one putt, per green. Then I made the mistake of saying so out loud. Not a smart thing to do. I ended up with five three putt greens before the day was over.

Barbara Ahola and Maggie Knapp both had 33 total putts to tie for winners in the First Flight. Pat Renaud and Ruth Baker both had 31 total putts to tie for winners in The Second Flight. Betty Tillis and Marie Dickmann both had 33 total putts to tie for winners in the Third Flight.

Bettye Dickens made the only chip-in for the day, on her first hole, for a par. Fran Ice birdied the eight hole with a long putt, and Patsy Sheppard birdied the 14th hole, which is a very long par four. With two great long shots, she was on the green, with a long 30' putt. The wind really picked up right at the time she was making her stroke, but the ball ran true to the center of the cup. Mary Lindsay and Ruth Baker both birdied the 15th, par three hole, with long putts.

On Tuesday, Feb. 5, eight of our members went to play in the Gator Competition at Haile Plantation Golf Course. That course is not a long one for the ladies, but there sure is plenty of trouble on all sides. Carol Healy came home with second low net in her flight. The rest of us did not do as well, but we all enjoyed a good luncheon afterwards.

Our nine-hole group, playing on Thursdays, is now starting at noon. Call 493-2375 for more information.
