The combination of recent hard freezes in north central Florida over the last couple of weeks along with relative humidity levels dipping as low at 18-20% has created higher than normal risks for wildfires. Hard freezes kill and dry-out grasses and other light vegetation that helps the spread of wildfires. Forestry officials are urging citizens to use caution, especially when conducting yard debris burns, bon fires and campfires. Conversely, the winter months are usually the time when certified experienced burners conduct more prescribed burning as trees enter their dormant stage.
