WILLISTON –Trailing by two points at the end of the first quarter, Williston High School's unbeaten boys turned on the jets and smothered Chiefland, 72-37, in a district basketball game Tuesday night, Dec. 11.
The Indians scored the first two points of the second quarter on free throws to take a 14-10 lead, but added only three more foul shots the rest of the first half. In fact, Chiefland went nearly 14 straight minutes without a field goal as the Devils' pressure defense forced numerous turnovers.
In the second-quarter run of 13 straight points, Deonte Welch had a pair of layups around a foul shot by C.J. James. After Devin Timmons hit a free throw, James and Calvin Root each buried a three-pointer to make it 23-14, and Chiefland never threatened again.
