WILLISTON –Trailing by two points at the end of the first quarter, Williston High School's unbeaten boys turned on the jets and smothered Chiefland, 72-37, in a district basketball game Tuesday night, Dec. 11.

The Indians scored the first two points of the second quarter on free throws to take a 14-10 lead, but added only three more foul shots the rest of the first half. In fact, Chiefland went nearly 14 straight minutes without a field goal as the Devils' pressure defense forced numerous turnovers.

In the second-quarter run of 13 straight points, Deonte Welch had a pair of layups around a foul shot by C.J. James. After Devin Timmons hit a free throw, James and Calvin Root each buried a three-pointer to make it 23-14, and Chiefland never threatened again.

Starting the second half up 27-17, the Devils started with six in a row on a bucket by Kelcey Coleman and foul shots by Welch and Coleman. Finally James scored from underneath to make it 33-17, before a free throw by Chiefland's Casey Brown broke the streak. James had a three-point play for Williston before Travis Donald finally sank a three-pointer for Chiefland's first field goal in a long time.

For Williston, James and Welch each finished with 17 points, while Root and Isaac Floyd each had nine. Timmons had eight, Coleman had five, Carlton Wilcox scored four and J.J. Hunt added three. James narrowly missed a double-double, collecting nine rebounds.

For Chiefland Donald and Steven Davis each had 10, Delmar Dial had seven, Marquis Jackson had five, Tommy Sheffield and Eugene Carter had two each, and John Manalastas, Reggie McClendon and Brown each had one.

Williston is scheduled to take on P.K. Yonge at home tonight (Thursday) in a key district matchup, then travels to Newberry Monday night for a makeup game, also a district contest.

In the junior varsity game, Williston won easily over Chiefland, 65-19. Tony James led 10 scorers with 14 points.
