TONYA TOWNSEND

Special to the Citizen

Watermelon Queens, past and present, visited Tonya Townsend's 3rd grade class at Williston Elementary School on April 26 to celebrate Florida’s Agricultural Literacy Day.  Lacee Lane, the 2010 Chiefland Watermelon Queen, read Florida Farms at Work by Nathan Brown, a book explaining facts about Florida agriculture. Lane also shared her experiences as the reigning queen and her participation in FFA throughout her middle and high school years at Chiefland High School.

Also present was the 1977 Queen, Carol Jones, the Career and Technical Education Coordinator for the School Board of Levy County, who followed up Brown’s book with her own review on activities about Florida agriculture. She also brought a garden for students to plant three different types of flowers to observe over the remainder of the year as part of their SUMS Science study of Plant Growth and Development.
