With mid-day temperatures approaching 100 degrees, it was only appropriate that the Heat would be the tournament’s biggest winner.
Tampa’s Wellswood Heat won the 2012 Cal Ripken division T-ball Region World Series, held at Chiefland’s Strickland Park on July 8. The team’s 12-2 win in three-and-a-half innings over Okeeheelee “Red” capped off a dominating run.
“It’s the result of a lot of hard work and dedication,” said Wellswood manager Vinnie Lozano, “they deserve this win.”
Lozano said his team practiced for two-and-a-half hours a day, four days a week in the weeks leading up to the tournament. The championship tournament proved Wellswood’s hard work.
The Heat was the only team in the tournament to go undefeated (4-0) in its bracket. They allowed only five runs in bracket play and recorded a shut out. Okeeheelee, the other team to record a shut out, was second in runs-allowed with 16. In the four-team final bracket, the Heat dispatched Palm Beach Gardens 15-5 in the semifinals and the Wolf Pack in the finals.
