The flag was at half staff, the crowd small, but the voices were firm and the room full of emotion as Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5625 in Chiefland held its Patriots Day service Thursday morning.
The group of 17, most with silver hair to denote them as survivors of World War II and the Vietnam War prayed, saluted and pledged their allegiance to Old Glory.
"We will always remember our collective obligations to ensure that justice is done, that freedom prevails, and the principles upon which our Nation was founded, endure," Wayne Carrignan, post commander intoned.
