On Aug. 1, the National Commander In Chief of the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States of America, Richard Eubank, of California, visited the local Chiefland VFW Post 5625. He and the Florida State Officers were in route to Tallahassee for a meeting with our governor and political representatives to promote veterans legislation.

At the 81st Florida VFW State Convention held in Daytona Beach last month, Daniel P. Duffy, of Davie, was elected State Commander. Commander Duffy, a former Marine, has served the VFW in Connecticut, Missouri and Florida for many years in preparation to successfully lead the Department of Florida for the 2011-12 year. His platform for this year is “Walk the Talk, Support Our Veterans.” It was an honor to welcome these two great VFW leaders to the Chiefland Post.

Local members of Post 5625 were honored at the Convention as follows;  Linda Hingson received “Auxiliary President of the Year,” and placed in the Honor Division of District Patriotic Instructors.   She also received numerous citations for her auxiliaries programs and was the first auxiliary in the state to obtain 100 percengt membership and All State status.  Her auxiliary finished the year with a record breaking 124 percent in membership.  Susan Carrignan received “District President of the Year” and the highest state honor available to a Ladies Auxiliary member, the “Past Commanders Club Auxiliary Member of the Year.”  District 7 is the largest in the state with 2,269 members in the surrounding seven counties, and eleven of these auxiliaries accomplished “All State Honors.”  This Florida District was the only one in the Nation in the largest class to obtain their 100 percent in membership prior to the December 31, 2010, challenge date. The Ladies Auxiliary 2010-11 Special Project was Prostate Cancer Aid and Research and the 2011-12 Special Project is JROTC.

Wayne Carrignan, a two term Past Commander of Chiefland Post 5625 and Past District 7 Commander, was elected to the office of State Senior Vice Commander. In June of 2012, he will assume leadership of the 74,000 members of the Florida VFW. The VFW National Convention will be held in San Antonio, Texas, August 25 – Sept. 1, and the Florida contingency expects to receive many honors for their work for veterans and their  families, youth and the community. Carrignan was the state representative to the VFW National Children’s Home in Eaton Rapids, Mich., and he and his wife attended their conference. He will also serve on the Board of Directors for the VFW Retirement Home in Ft. McCoy, as well as the VFW Southern Conference Resolutions Committee for the next two years.  Florida will have the National Commander In Chief for the first time in 21 years next term.  John Hamilton of Jacksonville, Florida will be elected at the July 2012 Convention in Reno, Nevada.  He and Carrignan will travel to Korea next year, where he was stationed while serving with the U.S. Army in 1965-66.
