Two men died when the 1956 Beech Craft T-34 plane they were in crashed shortly after takeoff from a private field into a wooded area in Morriston at 4:30 p.m. Saturday.
Dead are Ralph Ken Terry, 74, of Daytona Beach, the passenger, and Mike Fuller, 47, of Port Orange, the pilot.
The plane was registered to Terry, a pilot with over 60,000 hours of flight time and retired after 30 years of service with Northwest Airlines.
Fuller was a manager at Yelvington Jet Aviation, Inc., a company that provides service for private aircraft at Daytona Beach International Airport.
According to a Levy County Sheriff's Office press release a witness with over 50 years as a pilot said after the fixed wing, single engine plane taxied down the Wings Field private air strip he heard it spit and sputter and watched it crash into a heavily wooded area just north of the air strip. The air strip is located on Southeast 60th Street.
On Monday the investigation into the crash was taken over by the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board.
