Track and field new sport at CMS

By Claude Lewis

For the first time ever, Chiefland Middle School will be fielding a track and field team.

The interest has been great with more than 50 kids joining the team.

Finding the best events for them to compete in became the duty of co-coaches Wendell Corbin and Debra Weeks. Corbin is a veteran track coach who also coaches the sport at Chiefland High. Weeks is a sixth grade science teacher at CMS.

"The kids are very enthusiastic and it's contagious,"Weeks said. "It is really the perfect sport. KIds can cheer for each other as a team yet excel individually as well. Even if they don't win their event, they can always strive to beat their best time, throw or jump."

The middle school track team will spark more interest in the sport and act as a feeder for the high school program, which has been plagued by dwindling numbers.

The first meet –the Chiefland Invitational –is scheduled for this Thursday, March 13, at Chiefland Elementary.
