Tourist board kerfuffle at commission meeting

Commissioner wants change in membership

By Lou Elliott Jones, Editor

Normally the business of the county's tourism director is non-controversial, but such was not the case at Tuesday's Levy County Commission meeting when Visitor Bureau Director Carol McQueen and Commissioner Ryan Bell of Chiefland (R-District 4)  had a kerfuffle over tourism council appointments.
McQueen asked the commission to OK changing the designated makeup of the Tourist Development Council — which recommends to the commission how the county's 2 percent tourist tax will be spent — to allow the board to appoint a fourth accommodations representative.
But the commission, with one member absent, voted 4-0 to reject the change.  Commissioner Marsha Drew of Yankeetown (R-District 3) is on vacation.
Had the commission approved the change in wording, McQueen's next move was to ask the commission to approve the appointment of Kathy Koren of Chiefland to the TDC.  Koren is the operator of the Best Western and Days Inn motels in Chiefland.
