The Levy County Tourist Development Council has a vacancy after longtime member and Island Hotel owner Stanley Bair of Cedar Key resigned on July 19 from the organization.
Although Bair resigned more than two months ago, the TDC, nor Visitor Bureau Director Carol McQueen has advertised the vacancy or recommended a replacement to the Levy County Commission.
The TDC is an advisory panel that makes recommendations to the County Commission which can act on them or reject them. The TDC also makes recommendations to the commission on possible appointees to the TDC, which the commission can accept or reject.
Those member recommendations are made on the basis of the statute that governs the collection of the 2 percent bed tax on transient accommodations in Levy County.
Under the current structure, six of the nine TDC members must be involved in the tourist industry or have demonstrated an interest in tourist development. The resolution also outlines that of the six tourism interest members, three must be owners or operators of motels, hotels, recreational vehicle parks or other tourist accommodations subject to the county's 2 percent tourist tax.
Bair and Kathy Carver of Mermaid's Landing in Cedar Key, who had been on the TDC since 2002, and Helen Cialella of B's Marina and RV Campground in Yankeetown, made up the accommodations members.
Commission Chair Ryan Bell, who is one of the three government representatives on the TDC, has pushed for changes in the TDC's membership and operations. He told McQueen in a May 2012 meeting, "I have some concerns for this. I'm all for new members on the board."
