First lady gets behind summer literacy

By Mark Scohier, Staff writer

About 40 children, along with representatives from several state and local agencies, showed up at Fanning Springs State Park Tuesday to hear Florida First Lady Ann Scott talk about the importance of literacy.
Scott was participating in the 2011 Summer Literacy Adventure aimed at encouraging children to read over the summer break.
"I just encourage all of you, if you have not taken the pledge, to read. I encourage all of you to do it," Scott told the children shortly before reading a few passages from    "Those Magical Manatees," by Jan Lee Wicker.
Tuesday's event was the last of three at state parks throughout the state.
Lisa Brasher, director for the Levy County Public library System, said she was impressed with Scott's efforts to increase summer literacy.
"Anybody who makes an impression on these kids and makes them really think about it, that's good," Brasher said.
It's great to have a first lady who believes in "literacy, learning and libraries."
