The year 1912 was a busy one for the United States and for the rest of the world. Across the globe, the Republic of China was formed, and the countries of Serbia, Greece, Montenegro and Bulgaria were pitted against the Ottoman empire in the First Balkan War.
Closer to home, Americans voted Woodrow Wilson, a leader of the Progressive Movement, into office as the 28th president. Construction was completed on Boston's Fenway Park, Arizona and New Mexico officially became states and the Titanic, heading to New York City from England, slammed into an iceberg, killing more than 1,500 passengers.
Even closer to home, on a small farm in Chiefland, Oliver and Mattie Munn were celebrating the birth of their daughter, Artha.
Saturday, Artha Spillane will celebrate her 100th birthday with family and friends from all over the Eastern United States at Ebenezer Baptist Church.
"I feel good," Spillane said from her Chiefland home Monday. " I've had good health."
