Levy County Sheriff Johnny Smith has made several changes in the operation of his department, including hiring the former Cedar Key police chief and promoting six people in his office.
Charles W. "Bubba" Castell, former Cedar Key police chief, has been hired as a civil deputy to work in the Levy County Courthouse.
Castell replaces a deputy who has moved to the patrol division.
Chief Deputy Mike Johnson, a major in the office, has been promoted to the newly ceated position of colonel.
Capt. Mike Sheffield, jail administrator, is promoted to major.
Lt. Evan Sullivan, best known as the office's public information officer, is being promoted to captain over public information and the professional standards division
Lt. Scott Anderson is also promoted to captain. Anderson is commander of special operations.
Sgt. Duane Dykstra, commander of the Levy County Drug Task Force, is being promoted to lieutenant.
Sgt. Scott Finnan, head of training, is promoted to lieutenant.
The promotions will take effect on Oct. 6.
