Staff report
Floridians received a gift today when it was announced that the bay scallop start date has been pushed up from July 1 to June 24, and extended for two weeks from Sept. 30 to Oct. 14.
Midday Tuesday, Senator Charlie Dean emerged from a meeting with the Florida Cabinet in the Panhandle and announced that they approved his request to open scallop season one week early and extend the season for two weeks.
The motivation is to help the Florida businesses that rely on the tourism related to the scalloping season and have been adversely affected by the BP oil spill a year ago. For more information, go to www.myfwc.com.
