Salty talk on Civil War

-A A +A

On Saturday, Feb. 13, the Levy County Historical Society will present the second of three presentations about the invasion of the Civil War into Levy County.

The presentation is at 2 p.m. at the conference center of the Cedar Key RV Resort, 11980 S.W. Shiloh Road, Sumner.

Everyone with an interest in the history and heritage of Levy County is invited to join us at this free event to learn more about this time in our history.

The second in the three part series, “Salt - the lifeline of the Confederacy,” will be presented by Levy County Historian and author, Toni C. Collins. Along Florida’s Gulf Coast, locals set up salt works to claim this precious resource from the waters to preserve the meats shipped to the soldiers fighting in the North. The salt works located on Live Oak Key at No. 4 Channel provided more than 150 barrels of salt a day until the operation was raided in October 1862 by sailors and marines from the Union blockading vessels U.S.S. Somerset and Tahoma. Collins also will discuss “Salt Island” located in the Waccasassa Bay Preserve.
