Salaries the highest percentage of school board budget

-A A +A
By Ada Lang

A Levy County School Board member  voiced concerns in a board meeting last week about a disproportionately high percentage of funds going toward teachers' salaries.
Robert Philpot, a retired Williston  High School teacher and the newest member to the board, said that almost 70 percent of the busget for salaries seemed high to him, and he asked for an explanation of that line item in the 2011/2012 proposed budget.
Superintendent Robert Hastings explained that Levy County has a total of 14 schools - including two charter schools. Sizes range from the smallest in Yankeetown, averaging about 200 students, to Chiefland Elementary School, with about 900 students. Some of the schools are located more than 30 miles from each other.
The schools must be fully staffed, explained Hastings. They need administrative, custodial and teaching staff, buses, building maintenance and books, but the geographical distance between them does not lend itself to the sharing of resources.
