Scooter Haven denied permit to sell beer, wine

By Lou Elliott Jones, Editor

An Inglis campground that caters to a motorcycle riding clientele was denied a special exception permit for on-premise sale and consumption of beer and wine after residents complained that it did not fit the rural residential zoning and atmosphere of the neighborhood.

The denial, in a 3-2 vote by the Levy County Commission came in the panel's regular meeting on Tuesday morning. Voting to deny the petition were Commissioners Danny Stevens of Williston (R-District 5), Mike Joyner of Morriston (R-District 3) and Chad Johnson of Chiefland (R-District 2). Voting to allow the sales were Commissioners John Meeks of Bronson (R-District 1) and Ryan Bell of Chiefland (R-District 4).

The county staff and the county Planning Commission had recommended approval of the permit for Scooter Haven Country Club with certain conditions, such as limiting sales to the hours set by the county which bars sales and consumption between midnight and 7 a.m. in businesses, all sales and consumption had to be within a specified area on the 45-plus acre property and must be surrounded by a 6-foot fence.
