Chiefland High School officials pulled Shelby Beauchamp out of class at about 8:30 a.m. Friday to deliver the bad news: She was in trouble for something that had gone down in the school’s parking lot.
But Beauchamp didn’t buy it.
“He (Principal Bill Tovine) was telling a story I didn’t believe. He was like (in an authoritative voice), ‘Did you get a sticker for your parking permit?’ ” Beauchamp said, laughing.
Beauchamp’s suspicions were confirmed as she and her friend, Hailey Gerhard, spotted a cake and balloons on a conference room table surrounded by friends and family members there to congratulate the two on being named valedictorian and salutatorian.
“I kind of expected it,” said 17-year-old Beauchamp, this year’s valedictorian. “I study a lot.”
