Public gets their questions answered by hopefuls

Saturday's candidate forum, sponsored by Williston AARP Chapter 912 and Citizens for an Engaged Electorate, drew several questions and raised many more that were left unanswered due to time constraints.

What follows are the paraphrased questions and answers.

Superintendent of Schools

Q: What changes to standards, curriculum and testing do you support?

Jerry Lawrence: There's too much teaching to test, he said, and it takes away from what students need to learn. He supports working toward the elimination of so much testing.

Jeff Edison: Edison said students must be taught standards because the state holds each district accountable. He said Levy County students are 18th in the state in the area of U.S. History.

Q: How do you plan to promote enthusiasm to teachers?

Edison: The superintendent position is supposed to deflect in order to protect the staff. Things have to be done in a positive way, he said. "We haven't done a bad job, but we can do better," Edison said, adding he hopes to build transparency and trust,
