Grab the sunflower seeds, because high school baseball and softball seasons are rolling into action.
The Chiefland softball team begins its defense of three straight state championships Friday at Taylor County in Perry, with the JV squads starting at 5 p.m. and varsity to follow at 7 p.m.
The Lady Indians’ home opener is Tuesday, Feb. 21, against Bronson (5/7 p.m.). They continue the two-day homestand against Fort White on Wednesday, before hitting the road to face Bell that Thursday.
Eagle softball opened its season Monday with a 12-1 home loss to Trenton. It remains at home Thursday, Feb. 16, for a tilt with Newberry, before going on the road Friday for a district meeting at Bell.
The reigning state finalist Chiefland baseball team welcomes Bronson for a home opener on Monday, Feb. 20. Junior varsity clubs play at 4:30 p.m. before varsity takes the field at 7.
The Indians return for another home game Tuesday, Feb. 21, in a varsity-only matchup with returning state champion Mayo-Lafayette at 6 p.m. The game is a rematch of last year’s Class 1A title game, in which the Hornets prevailed 2-0.
After taking on Chiefland, the Eagle baseball club plays host to Trenton Thursday, Feb. 23, for a district clash.
