People plead to reject mine

-A A +A
By Jeff M. Hardison

BRONSON - Southern Levy County residents pleaded with their leaders to reject a request for a special exception to allow a giant mine in the Gulf Hammock area.

County Commission Chairman Sammy Yearty told the group, led by Betty Berger of Inglis, that the commission would listen to them. Until the quasi-judicial hearing where the commission would decide whether to grant the special exception to zoning, however, the commissioners cannot comment about the issue.

County Attorney Anne Brown said the board is precluded from considering anything except evidence presented at the official hearing when it occurs. That might not be for another 60 to 90 days, Zoning Director Rob Corbitt said, because Tarmac America has not scheduled another hearing before the Planning Commission, which will make a recommendation to the County Commission about whether to accept or reject the application for a special exception.

The Planning Commission previously tabled the issue until Tarmac returns with more facts about the impact on the water supply.
