Participation, sales could dip 10 percent at Suwannee River Fair

-A A +A
By Lou Elliott Jones, Editor

The Suwannee River Fair will be held in March, but you can expect it to have fewer animals for sale and a lingering question of whether buyers will be out bidding for those animals.

Brad Etheridge, vice president of the Fair, told the Chiefland Rotary Club in its Feb. 11 meeting that fewer animals are being entered in the Fair than in 2008 when 460 animals sold by children from Dixie, Gilchrist and Levy counties brought in $723,070.

That fair set a record of $18 per pound bid for the Reserve Champion Market Hog raised by Tyler Johnson of Dixie Senior FFA. At 275 pounds, the pig grossed $4,950.

Etheridge, a Williston cattleman, said he expects the down economy will have an impact on the fair, but he still expects the fair to offer the same values it has for many years: great entertainment for families, great life experience for the children who raise animals for the judging and sales, and money for college funds from the annual auction of prized animals.
