Paddlers, friends clean up Yankeetown bridge

Eight members and friends of the Florida Paddling Trails Association did a coastal clean-up around Bird Creek Bridge on County Road 40 in Yankeetown on June 18.
The original plan called for starting at the bridge and ending at the boat ramp. But the amount of trash at the bridge consumed all of the volunteers' time. The clean-up team found 20 tires, over 20 cans of paint, and 18 trash bags of bottles, cans, plastic bottles and trash. The trash included ice bags, televisions, a vacuum cleaner and garden hose. Approximately one ton of trash was picked up and 24 volunteer hours were put in by the eight people. Participants were Jack and Susie Schofield of Yankeetown, Whitey Markle of Orange Lake, Brack Barker of Levy County, Emily Casey, Tracey Colson, Matt Clemmons of Crystal River and John Herbert of Gainesville.
The county boat ramp was packed with over 70 boaters, numerous kayakers and many people picnicking swimming and fishing and enjoying the day.
