Noisy crowd shoots down mine proposal

-A A +A
By Lou Elliott Jones, Editor

After a four-hour public hearing and testimony from more than 20 residents who live in Levy and Marion counties, the Levy County Planning Commission unanimously refused to recommend an application for a mining operation south of Williston.

An audience of about 150 who gathered to oppose the special exception to allow the mining operation greeted the commission, in its first meeting for several months due to the economic downturn.

But the crowd, which was noisy at times, cheered the commission’s decision and went away happy.

Johannes Vanderwey, who applied for the conditional special exception permit for the mining operation to be done near the intersection of U.S. Highway 41 and County Road 322 in Montbrook community, and the engineer, David Tillman, indicated they would appeal to the Board of County Commissioners to allow the mining operation.

Vanderwey said a Colorado lab has tested the limerock to be mined at the site and found it to be the best scrubber rock for cleaning pollution from smokestack emissions. They are used in coal-fired power plants like Progress Energy’s Crystal River plant.
