Man is Levy's 15th fatality in 2013

The 68-year-old man who died in a motorcycle accident on Sept. 15 has been indentified as Ewald Josef Hackenberger of Berlin, Germany.

He is Levy County's 15th traffic fatality for 2013. 

According to a Florida Highway Patrol report Hackenberger was heading north on a 2013 Harley-Davidson on U.S. Highway 27A, south of U.S. Highway 19/98, when the front tire struck the curb and scraped and gouged the curb before overturning on the shoulder and continuing on past a sidewalk. 

Hackenberger, who was wearing a helmet at the time of the accident, was thrown from the motorcycle and hit a signpost before landing on the shoulder. He was pronounced dead by Levy County Department of Public Safety Paramedic Steve Severance at 5:47 p.m.

FHP Cpl. Connie McNeill reported a witness said at the time of the crash the roadway was wet and there was light rainfall. 

The man's identity had been withheld pending notification of next of kin.
