The scholarship was a logical way to honor the memory of Guyton a popular athlete, said event co-organizer and Chiefland native Kelly Winkle.
Guyton, 24, was killed on Oct. 25, 2011, in Mount Ranier, Md. in a robbery attempt. He was attending classes at Howard University, where he was majoring in music composition.
He also played on the school’s football team.
Guyton served in the Marine Corps for four years and was a member of the U.S. Marine Drum and Bugle Corps.
The 2005 Cheifland High School graduate was a multi-sport star. In his senior year, Guyton ran the third leg in the Indians’ state-champion 4x100 relay team. He also played on the school’s football, basketball and baseball teams. Guyton also earned a black belt in karate.
Guyton was a member of the school’s band.
Besides his musical and athletic talents he was remembered for his huge smile and, above else, his infectiously freindly personality.
