Marine Corps celebrates birthday

-A A +A

The Tri-County Marine Corps League Detachment 1018 celebrated the 238th birthday of the Marine Corps on Nov. 9 at The Gathering Table restaurant in Chiefland with great food, entertainment and dancing.

In the customary cake cutting ceremony, the first piece of cake was given to the oldest marine — Fred Peterkin, 80, of Gainesville, who then passed it on to the youngest Marine, Bryan Chrisp, 38, of Newberry.

The sword used to cut the first piece of cake, belonged to the late Marine Corps Capt. Nancy Peterkin, a life member of Detachment 1018.

The musical entertainment was provided by "Those Guys" from Deland: Garrett on trumpet, Christopher on alto sax and Dwayne on tenor sax. Garrett and Christopher are grandsons of Bill and Maxine Cummings of Bell. A good time was had by all. Semper Fi.
