Levy CFCC offers classes

CNA Program

If you are interested in a career in health care you are invited to a free information session about the Certified Nursing Assistant class that will be offered by Central Florida Community College at Williston High School this fall.

The CNA program is a great first step to a health care career. It prepares students for employment as nursing assistants in hospitals, long-term care facilities, medical offices and clinics.

The information session is scheduled for Tuesday, July 29, from 7 to 8 p.m. in the CNA classroom at Williston High School, 427 W. Noble Ave. in Williston (the small building next to Pesso?s Antiques at the corner of Alt. U.S. 27 and N.W. Sixth St.

Digital Photography

The Levy Center of Central Florida Community College will offer Basic Digital Photography and Editing. The four-week class will meet Thursdays, Aug. 7-28, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Levy Center, 114 Rodgers Blvd. in Chiefland.

Students will need to bring their camera, camera manual and cables as well as a USB/Flash drive to class. The course fee is $79.

Students will learn the basic functions of a digital camera and how to transfer photos to a computer for storage and printing. They will also learn basic photography concepts regarding light, composition and depth of field, and will be introduced to Photoshop Elements and free software downloads for photo editing.

Instructor Bill Kilborn has earned the Master of Photography Degree and the Photographic Craftsman Degree from the Professional Photographers of America. He made the transition to digital photography as soon as it became viable and has become a master of Adobe Photoshop with 15 years experience.

The registration deadline is Thursday, July 31.

Florida-friendly Landscaping

The Levy Center of Central Florida Community College will offer a six-week Florida-Friendly Landscaping class. The class will meet Saturdays, Aug. 9 through Sept. 13, from 9 to 11 a.m. at the Levy Center, 114 Rodgers Blvd. in Chiefland.

Students will learn about the soil conditions in North Central Florida and how to select plants that work in this area. Other subjects that will be covered in depth include: watering; fertilizing and pest control; attracting or repelling wildlife; and hardscaping. A field trip to Fanning Springs State Park and a ?dirty hands? lab on planting native plants from seeds are included. The course fee of $60 includes the field trip and all materials.

Instructor Annette Long holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Agriculture and Environmental Landscaping from the University of Florida.

The registration deadline is Thursday, July 31.

Painting Class

The Levy Center of Central Florida Community College will offer arts and crafts lovers the opportunity to learn the One-Stroke decorative painting technique made popular by professional artist Donna Dewberry.

The four-week Beginning One-Stroke Painting class will be offered 6 to 7:30 p.m. on Thursdays, Aug. 14 through Sept. 4, at the Levy Center, 114 Rodgers Blvd. in Chiefland. The course fee is $69. Materials and supplies will be available for purchase from the instructor at the first class.

Students will learn to paint leaves, flowers and fruits on several different surfaces as they extend their painting ability each week. One project will be completed at each session. No previous painting experience is required. Instructor Nancy Stork is One-Stroke certified.

The registration deadline is Thursday, Aug. 7.

Retirement Investing

The Levy Center of Central Florida Community College will offer a new course this fall on the ?Basics of Investing for Retirement.?

The course will meet Mondays, Aug. 25 through Sept. 22, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Levy Center, 114 Rodgers Blvd. in Chiefland. The course fee is $49.

Students will learn about individual retirement accounts, 401Ks, mutual funds, stocks, annuities, bonds, certificates of deposit, and more. The instructor is Megan Quinn, investment executive/advisor at Capital City Banc Investments. Quinn speaks about investments at public events.
