Legislature, Scott give us short shrift

Residents of Dixie, Gilchrist and Levy county cannot be blamed if they just shake their heads at what happens with our Legislature in Tallahassee.

Nor can they be blamed if their heads are spinning about our governor as well. Scott went off in a room with his staff and whacked over $400 million from his $79 billion “Keep Florida Working” budget.

But first, consider what happened with the state budget in the past two weeks: 

The Legislature reduced its promised second-of-three payments for construction of  the Jack Wilkinson Levy Campus of the College of Central Florida from $4.3 million to $2 million.

One legislative aide said that is not a paltry amount of money. And, he reminded me, the county is getting the second of three payments for the Williston Middle High School, a whopping $11 million or so. 

But this college thing breaks faith with everyone living in our three county area. 

While the Legislature’s budget conferees met in that virtual smoke-filled room, they put in some gifts that were not ranked high on the state Public Education Capital Outlay list, like:
