TRENTON -Trenton High's fine lefthanded pitcher -Andy Jones -will be continuing his baseball career at Daytona Beach Community College.
"They recruited him,"said THS coach Scott Guthrie. "It's a good fit. They encourage academics and stay on top of players in the classroom."
Jones has been the ace of the Tigers for three years. As a junior, he finished with a 7-1 record. This year, he is 6-5, but the record is not indicative of how well he has pitched. For example, Jones has lost two, one-run games to Chiefland.
Jones has shown excellent command of three pitches.
Pitching in rural Gilchrist County without much publicity, Jones has to be considered a sleeper for Daytona Beach CC coach Tim Touma.
"He came to a camp and ended up being a great kid,"Touma said. "He's a perfect fit for what our program is all about. He's a good student and a competitor. We're lucky to get him."
Touma said the plan now is to use Jones out of the bullpen.
"He could be our go-to guy as a lefty out of pen,"he said. "He can come in with his mix of pitches an keep batters off strive."
