NEWBERRY –The Chiefland High boys basketball team had a strong performance on the road on Friday night, but the host Newberry Panthers were able to hold off the Indians, 77-64.
Chiefland dropped its eighth straight game. The Indians are 7-15 overall and 1-9 in district play.
Chiefland finishes up this week at home against Lafayette County on Tuesday night and Interlachen Thursday night.
Thursday night is also senior night as the 12th graders will be honored.
The Class 3A District 5 tournament will begin Tuesday, Feb. 5, at Williston. The Indians will rematch with Newberry beginning at 7 p.m.
Chiefland led Newberry by eight points after one quarter, but the Panthers came back and took a 33-32 lead at halftime. Newberry then took control with a big third quarter, leading by 12 heading into the final eight minutes. Turnovers hurt the Indians in that session.
"We pressed and played pretty good defense,"Indian coach Mark Lundy said.
Newberry went to the line a whopping 31 times while Chiefland only went to the stripe 10 times.
