Homemakers protest drug tests for volunteering

-A A +A
By Lou Elliott Jones, Editor

A homemakers group — with most members over age 55 — took the Levy County Commission to task for requiring they provide urine samples for drug tests in order to do volunteer work in the county's libraries.
The Bronson Home and Community Educators President Peggy Rowe said the group's members would find it degrading and be totally offended to be tested for the presence of illicit drugs. She said the members were told of the drug testing policy by a county extension service official. Rowe said the official said it was required before the club aould do volunteer work in nursing homes, libraries or 4-H activities.
"It should not be needed and we should not be forced to do it," Rowe said, as more than a dozen members filled seats in the small commission meeting room.  "You are demanding a drug test from people who are freely giving their time."
Citing the prohibition against unreasonable searches in the U.S. Constitution, Rowe said, "Are we now guilty until proven innocent?"
