History of the Yulee Sugar Mill Ruins presented by the Cedar Key Historical Society

-A A +A

The Cedar Key Historical Society invites all interested persons to their last Thursday coffee of this season on Thursday, April 21, at 10 a.m. at the Cedar Key Community Center.  Ranger Leroy Smith, of the Yulee Sugar Mill Ruins Historic State Park, Homosassa, will be on hand to enlighten and entertain the audience about this little known historic site.
The sugar mill was once part of the Yulee’s 5,100-acre plantation named “Margarita” that was located on the Homosassa River in Citrus County. In 1851, Yulee had a plantation home built on Tiger Tail Island and a sugar mill built on the mainland some distance from the river’s edge. In his quest to become a leading merchant in growing sugar cane and manufacturing sugar, Yulee enlarged his plantation so that all the needed foodstuff would be provided to the plantation inhabitants.
The Yulee sugar mill went into operation in 1851 and was operated until 1864 when a Union Naval force invaded Tiger Tail Island.  What happened to Yulee’s plantation home, and was the sugar mill damaged?  Ranger Smith will tell you all about it.
