By Steve Waters, Sports Editor

The School Health Advisory Council held its first meeting of the 2009-10 school year Tuesday to discuss the previous school year’s successes as well as plans for keeping students healthy. The council, made up of nurses and health officials from the Levy County school district,   spent much of its meeting talking through the districts upcoming plans for prevention of both seasonal flu and swine flu. Angela Phillips, chair of the Advisory Council, said that teachers, administrators and even custodial departments were responding very well to the swine flu outbreak in Levy County schools. She said that the district’s top priority was sending students and adults with symptoms home to prevent spreading of the disease. Diligent cleanliness in the schools was also encouraging, she said. “We’re doing a really good job, and I think that’s because no one’s taking a chance this year,” Phillips said. “If there’s a bathroom without soap, I hear about it.” Jeannie Norris, school health coordinator for Levy County, said that the nasal flu mist vaccine will be administered to K-5 students starting Oct.
