Grant could ease strain on police

The Chiefland Police Department and city staff may have found a way to ease the tightening budget faced in the wake of a still weak economy and rising prices.
The Chiefland City Commission voted unanimously Monday night to allow CPD to apply for a grant that would pay for the hiring of a new police officer. The grant, known as the Community Oriented Policing Services Grant, also allows a department, in lieu of hiring a new officer, to keep a police officer position that may be threatened due to budget constraints.
Chiefland Police Chief Robert Douglas said the grant pays for three years salary of an entry-level position. It also pays for benefits, though the city would have to commit to keeping the position for an additional year after the term of the grant. Douglas told the commission he wanted to add a patrol position to the force.
“I like the idea of retaining an officer whose position may be removed due to budget shortfalls,” said Mayor Teal Pomeroy.
“Hopefully, we're out of this (economic situation) in four years,” said Commissioner Rollin Hudson.
