Chiefland track and field took a big leap to start the season, opening on the road at the Clay meet. Both boys' and girls' teams had mixed results overall, but some excellent individual and event performances.
“We did pretty good, considering it was our first meet,” said girls' head coach Emily Gore.
“Pretty fair, nothing great,” agreed boys' head coach Wendell Corbin.
Among the top performers for the boys were Zach Tyson, who had a personal best in his 41.18 win of the 300m hurdles, and the 4x100 relay team, consisting of Myles Mitchem, Genesis Cilo-Cilo, Tyson and Cantrell Richardson. The 4x100 relay team placed second with a time of 45.2.
“They're showing potential to get down below 44 seconds, and that's real good for this time of year,” Corbin said.
“Everything else was sort of spotted. We had a couple ninth graders – Marcus McMahon and Curtis Teague – did very well. Genesis Cilo-Cilo got fourth in the 100 and 200; Kyle Bason got sixth in discus and Kendon Wasson got sixth in shot put.”
Gore has several runners from the hardy girls' cross country team, and they are already showing improvement.
“JaRobyn Rome placed sixth in the mile,” Gore said.
“She had been running seven minutes in practice and she's already got it down to 6:40 (her finish time in the meet).”
Sprinter Sharnese Rome had a very good outing, finishing third in the 100m and 200m with times of 12.95 and 28.6 respectively. Nekila Strong finished eighth in the 200m with a time of 29.71.
Sharnese Rome also did well in the long jump, with a best jump of 12' 9 1/2” for sixth place. Tiffany English grabbed fifth in the triple jump with a best of 21' 9 1/2”.
The girls' 4x400 team, consisting of JaRobyn Rome, Mariah Mather, Krystal Munnerlyn and Meagan Morgan, placed fifth with a time of 5:06.
