5000 pound challenge starts Saturday

The Levy County Wellness Coalition (LCWC) is hosting a 5,000 Pound Challenge that will kick-off Feb. 21 from 9 a.m.-noon at Nature Coast Regional Hospital.

The kick off event will feature a parade, fitness demonstrations, face painting for kids, information on how and where to get healthy and more.

The Challenge aims to provide opportunities for healthy living throughout the county such as nutrition, exercise, smoking cessation, heart attack and stroke prevention, community gardening, and much more through December 2009. These activities will be available to individuals, families, congregations, and worksites through the end of the year.

You can register at any time but pounds lost will only be counted from the date of registration onward.

Teams, families and congregations can register by calling 486-3405 or request an application by e-mailing slande_celeste@doh.state.fl.us. Register now to receive your start up package.

The Healthy Family Makeover will help three families to improve their overall health. Families will receive assistance from a physical therapist, a registered dietician and tobacco cessation specialist.

Participating families will receive one of three prizes such as physical makeover from Royal Tanz that will include hair cut and style, manicures and other services for the whole family.

To participate, families must live in Levy County. Total weight lost by families will go towards Levy County's goal 5,000 pound goal.

Families who want to participate will be asked to submit a picture with the application to Healthy Family Makeover c/o Levy County Health Department, 66 West Main Street Bronson, FL 32621.

Applications will be available Feb. 1 at all local libraries, the Levy County Health Department, Nature Coast Rehabilitation, and school nurses' offices, and at http://tinyurl.com/adafyj.
