FWC urges caution for Labor Day boaters

-A A +A

Labor Day marks the end of the traditional summer boating season in many places, even though Florida weather is perfect for getting out on the water most of the year.
The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) urges boaters to have fun by boating safely, and to be careful over the upcoming busy holiday weekend.
“There are a few key things you can do to stay as safe as possible on the water,” said Capt. Tom Shipp, of the FWC’s Boating and Waterways Section. “Operate your vessel with caution, have all the necessary safety equipment on board, and wear a life jacket.”
So far this year, there have been 37 boating accident fatalities. Though fewer lives have been lost this year as compared to this time last year, safe boat operation is always important.
“Even one death is too many,” Shipp said. “Unfortunately, around the state, there have been several boating fatalities in the past few weeks. We are asking boaters to put extra focus on safety to prevent these tragedies.”
