-A A +A
By Carolyn Risner

Full of life.

That's how most everyone remembers Julia Haile.

This week, family and friends are mourning the death of Haile who died Saturday at the age of 82.

A Georgia native who moved to Levy County in 1957, Haile was a teacher until her retirement.

In 1996 she became the first African-American elected to the Levy County School Board.

For 15 years she taught home economics at Chiefland High School.

"She was an outstanding teacher," remembers Paul Johnson, Haile's former principal and the school superintendent when she was elected to the school board.

"She was full of life," Johnson said. "She was very intelligent and took an interest in the students themselves."

Nancy Bell knew Haile for over 28 years.

"She was a dynamic woman and an outstanding politician," Bell said.

She was a president of the United Methodist Women at First United Methodist Church of Chiefland where she worked tirelessly, Bell said.

"She was so full of life," Bell said. "She was always on the road-ready to help people in any way she could. She was also a great spiritual guide for many."
