Former Chiefland commissioner and mayor Bobby Deas was approved 3-0 and sworn in at Monday night's commission meeting as a temporary fill-in for the Group 1 seat, previously held by the late Commissioner Frank Buie.

Deas, who served on the commission from 1982 to 1990 and was mayor from 1985 to 1987, will serve until Sept. 9, when a new commission will again vote for a temporary commissioner to serve until after the October special election.

The special election was declared after Buie's death last week. Buie, who had held the seat since 2007, was running against his nephew, Chris Jones.

Jones is still a candidate, and he will fill the seat if no other challengers step forward during the special election qualifying period.

Whomever wins the special election will take office Oct. 14.
