Some fathers like to spend quality time with their sons out on a ball field or on a lake. For area orthodontist Bill Martin and his sons, it’s more likely on top of a 14,000-foot tall mountain.
On July 1, Martin and his two sons completed their most recent trek up Washington’s Mt. Ranier, the most topographically prominent mountain the lower 48 states of the U.S. It was a way for the avid climber to reconnect with old friends from his time living in the Pacific Northwest, as well as another opportunity to bond with his two favorite other climbers.
The team of Bill Martin, David Martin (age 23), Paul Martin (22) and their two friends from Washington successfully summited the mountain, despite rain, sleet, snow and gusts of winds around 50 miles an hour. The journey up the mountain, which saw a mountain guide lose his life just a week earlier, was intimidating, the oldest Martin said. But it was nothing out of the ordinary for him.
