The City of Fanning Springs has been awarded a $600,000 Florida Small Cities Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) in the neighborhood revitalization category that will assist with expanding the city’s sewer system.
“All the taxpayers out there, this is free money that we need for our sewer,” said Council Member Stoney Smith at last Tuesday’s city council meeting.
Kathy Baker, of Jordan and Associates, the company that wrote the grant, presented the grant award contract at the meeting. The grant has a 24-month term, four months for environmental review and then 20 months for the project to be completed.
The new stretch of sewer will be put in primarily on Florida Street and Carolina Way, said Mayor Cheryl Nekola in a phone interview on Monday. Residents in that area will be required to hook up to the new sewer system once it is in place.
Nekola said, “It’s just an ongoing process,” adding that they intend to continue applying for more grants “until the whole city is connected.”
