The Friends of the A.F. Knotts Library invites the public to join the January activities that the under-recognized talent of black artists of another age through books, films and a live performance. The A.F. Knotts Public Library at 11 56th St., Yankeetown, is the place to meet.
Tuesday, Jan. 10, at 8 p.m. the award-winning film by Vincent Minnelli “Cabin in the Sky” will be shown. This 1943 musical film has an all black cast which includes singer Lena Horne, Ethel Waters and Eddie “Rochester” Anderson.
Friday, Jan. 13, at 11 a.m., there will be a viewing of the PBS documentary “Zora’s Roots” and at 1:30 p.m. a showing of the 2005 Oprah-produced movie “Their Eyes Were Watching God”, based on Zora Neale Hurston’s best known novel. Hurston was an award winning novelist in the first half of the 1900s, was raised in Eatonville and was a close friend of Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings.
Monday, Jan. 16, at 2 p.m., Phyllis McEwan will prerform “Zora Live” under the sponsorship of the Florida Humanities Council.
