 n Short story writing workshops offered

   The College of Central Florida Levy Center will offer two Short Story Fiction Writing Workshops in the spring semester.

   Participants will create original work in both workshops, which will meet on Tuesdays from 2 - 4 p.m. The course fee for each workshop is $65.

 Workshop I: Getting Started will meet Jan. 11 through Feb. 1. Participants will learn the basic structural options of the short story, narrative points of view, character development, dialogue and other techniques to maintain reader interest while creating two original short stories.

   Workshop II: Revising and Refining will meet Feb. 8 through March 1. Participants will expand writing skills by strengthening their original work through trimming, creating tension and maintaining narrative cohesion.

n American sign language course at Levy Center

   The College of Central Florida Levy Center will offer a new class on American Sign Language. Expressive Basic Beginner Sign Language will meet on Thursdays, Jan. 27 through March 3, from 6 - 8 p.m. The course fee is $75.

  Students will learn how to sign the deaf alphabet and how to fingerspell basic vocabulary. Facial expressions and body language will be incorporated into what is being communicated. At the end of the course, the goal is for students to be able to carry on a simple conversation with comfort.

  The instructor, Linda Cardinal, is a Levy County resident who has served the deaf community for the past 15 years. She is an active member of the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf and the Florida Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf. She holds Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages certificate specializing in American Sign Language.
