It is estimated that about 75 percent of the Chiefland Elementary School 's 854 students turned out to donate $1 or trade canned goods for dollars to help the Chiefland Rotary Club and Rotary International in its drive to eradiate polio. In return for the donations, the Rotarians painted the students' fingers — starting with the pinky — purple to show they joined the fight.
