Two suspects in a Gilchrist County burglary tried to evade capture by jumping into the Suwannee River, but the water's cold temperature made them re-think that plan and they surrendered, according to a Levy County Sheriff's Office press release.
Gregory Alan Bennett II, 22, and Heather Bartholomew, 20, both of Old Town, are charged with resisting arrest without violence in Levy County plus burglary and grand theft in Gilchrist County. His bond is $55,000. Her bond is $12,000.
The two were found inside a Gilchrist County residence by a relative of the resident. They fled the scene in a black SUV into Levy County, but were followed by the witness. The vehicle was found behind Fanning Springs City Hall and the suspects were spotted fleeing on foot into a nearby wooded area.
Levy Deputy Clint Anderson and K-9 partner Robiek, located shoes and a .22-caliber rifle. The area was cordoned off and Levy Investigator Roger Bell spotted them running toward the river. Bell ordered them to stop, but the suspects jumped into the river.
